Position Summary

The Substitute Teacher provides instructional continuity and a safe, supportive learning environment when the Head Teacher is absent. Because Crown King Elementary School District serves students in a small, multi-grade setting, the Substitute Teacher must be flexible, dependable, organized, and able to support students across multiple grade levels and subject areas. The Substitute Teacher follows established lesson plans, maintains classroom routines and expectations, and supports the academic, social, and emotional well-being of all students.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

·   Implement lesson plans and instructional activities provided by the Head Teacher or district administration.

·   Provide appropriate instruction, assistance, and supervision for students across multiple grade levels and subject areas.

·   Maintain established classroom procedures, schedules, routines, and behavioral expectations.

·   Take attendance and maintain accurate classroom records as directed.

·   Adapt instruction and provide support to help students remain engaged and successful during the school day.

·   Support students with individualized learning needs by following provided accommodations, modifications, and instructional directions.

·   Use classroom technology, instructional materials, and district resources appropriately and responsibly.

·   Maintain an orderly classroom and ensure materials, equipment, and learning spaces are left organized at the end of the assignment.

·   Provide the Head Teacher with relevant notes regarding completed work, student progress, behavior, concerns, and other important events.

·   Perform other reasonable duties related to student instruction and school operations as assigned.

Student Supervision and Safety

·   Provide active supervision of students in the classroom and during transitions, recess, lunch, arrival, dismissal, and other assigned activities.

·   Follow district safety procedures, emergency protocols, student release procedures, and school rules.

·   Immediately report student injuries, safety concerns, suspected bullying, threats, or other significant concerns to the Head Teacher or designated administrator.

·   Maintain appropriate professional boundaries and protect student confidentiality in accordance with district policy and applicable law.

·   Never leave students unsupervised unless appropriate coverage has been arranged.

Professional Expectations

·   Report to work on time and remain for the full scheduled assignment unless otherwise authorized.

·   Demonstrate professional, respectful, and appropriate communication with students, families, staff, and community members.

·   Maintain confidentiality regarding students, employees, and district matters.

·   Follow Crown King Elementary School District policies, procedures, staff expectations, and professional standards.

·   Demonstrate flexibility and sound judgment when working in a small-school environment where responsibilities may vary throughout the day.

·   Refrain from using personal electronic devices during instructional and supervisory duties except when required for school-related purposes or emergencies.

Minimum Qualifications

·   Meet applicable Arizona requirements for serving as a substitute teacher.

·   Possess the ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing.

·   Demonstrate the ability to follow written lesson plans, directions, schedules, and school procedures.

·   Demonstrate appropriate classroom management, professionalism, dependability, and sound judgment.

·   Successfully complete any district-required background checks, fingerprinting, documentation, and mandatory training.

Preferred Qualifications

·   Previous experience working with children or adolescents in an educational, childcare, youth, or community setting.

·   Experience working with students across multiple grade levels.

·   Familiarity with technology-based instruction, online learning platforms, and classroom educational technology.

·   Ability to work effectively in a small, rural, multi-grade school environment.

Physical Requirements

The employee must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation. Duties may require prolonged standing or sitting, walking throughout school facilities and grounds, bending, reaching, and assisting with classroom materials and equipment. The employee must be able to supervise students effectively in indoor and outdoor settings and respond appropriately during emergency situations.

Employment Conditions

Substitute Teacher assignments are offered on an as-needed basis and may vary in duration, grade level, and instructional responsibilities. Employment is subject to district policies, applicable Arizona requirements, and completion of required employment documentation and training.
