Position Summary
The Academy Classroom Aide supports students attending The Academy at Mingus, an alternative high school program designed to provide students with a smaller, supportive learning environment and an individualized path toward graduation.
The Classroom Aide works directly with students to provide supervision, encouragement, academic assistance, and accountability. Because Academy students have a wide range of academic needs, learning styles, life circumstances, and behavioral needs, this position requires patience, flexibility, strong relationship-building skills, and the ability to maintain clear and consistent expectations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Supervise students and help maintain a safe, respectful, productive classroom environment.
- Build positive, supportive relationships with students while maintaining appropriate boundaries and expectations.
- Encourage and motivate students to attend regularly, remain engaged, and make consistent progress toward graduation.
- Assist students with Edgenuity, including navigating courses, understanding assignments, troubleshooting basic issues, and staying on pace.
- Monitor student work and progress and help identify students who may need additional assistance or intervention.
- Provide individual and small-group academic support as needed.
- Reinforce academic integrity and encourage students to complete their own work.
- Redirect off-task or inappropriate behavior calmly and consistently.
- Support classroom routines and expectations, including technology use, cell phone procedures, breaks, attendance, and appropriate student conduct.
- Communicate student concerns, progress, or behavioral issues to the Academy Director.
- Celebrate student progress, course completion, credit attainment, and movement toward graduation.
- Perform other duties related to supporting the daily operation of The Academy as assigned.
Qualifications and Skills
Required:
- Experience working with adolescents or young adults with varying academic ability levels and behavioral needs.
- Ability to work effectively with students who may be credit deficient, disengaged from traditional school, or experiencing challenging circumstances.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to remain calm, patient, consistent, and professional when responding to challenging student behavior.
- Comfortable working with computers and learning online educational programs.
- Ability to work independently while functioning as part of a small, student-centered team.
Preferred:
- Previous experience in school settings - alternative education, special education, behavioral support, youth services, or similar setting.
- Experience with Edgenuity or other online learning platforms.
The Ideal Candidate
The ideal Academy Classroom Aide understands that students do not all take the same path to graduation. This person is firm but caring, patient but persistent, and able to connect with students while holding them accountable.
Above all, the Classroom Aide should believe that students can make progress, overcome setbacks, and successfully earn their high school diploma when provided with the right combination of relationships, support, structure, and accountability.
