Position: Bus Driver            

Salary Schedule/Day Rate (Subject to Change):  Support Staff Salary Schedule/$17.36. Additional credit for related years of service and education. 

Work Calendar: 10 months

Hours: 35 hours per week

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Benefits: Eligible, first of the month following date of hire

About the Role

The Bus Driver transports students to and from designated stops while maintaining a safe environment and in accordance with the policies of the J.O. Combs Elementary School District and the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT). When transporting children with special needs, the Bus Driver is responsible for ensuring the students are secured properly and appropriately for transport to and from school.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

• Assists students needing assistance boarding and exiting the bus. Assists students during emergency evacuation.
• Advises students and other passengers of behavior requirements for enforcing procedures and ensuring safety.
• Conducts bi-annual school bus safety drills with students and regularly informs students about bus safety.
• Obeys all traffic laws.
• Maintains a positive and professional attitude and demeanor.
• Assesses incidents, complaints, and potential emergencies and reports major problems to the supervisor.
• Surveys school bus stops and routes for potential hazards and reports hazards to the principal or supervisor.
• Reports needed repairs and damage to the Mechanic or Transportation Supervisor.
• Completes and maintains documentation of pre-trip inspection in compliance with State regulations.
• Assists with ongoing program of general maintenance and upkeep of any assigned bus to include   sweeping, cleaning of the seats and windows.
• Maintains a current listing of students including emergency contact information.
• Attends safety meetings and trainings related to State and District requirements.
• Ensures that communications between bus and other drivers and between bus and school are working effectively prior to departing from the school.
• Prepares required reports and documents and submits them in a timely manner to the proper authorities.
• Submits to drug and/or alcohol testing when required.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

What You Need

• Must have a high School Diploma or GED.
• Must have or be able to obtain a Fingerprint Clearance Card, through the Arizona Department of Public Safety.
• Must have or be able to obtain an Arizona CDL with Passenger and School Bus endorsements.
• Must have or be able to obtain CPR Certification.
• Must be able to assess concerns and complaints of students and proceed appropriately.
• Must sustain a safe driving record.
• Ability to use 2-way radio for communication.
• Must be able to operate all doors, windows, and lifts on various school buses.
• Must be able to properly use car seats, seat belts, safety restraints, and harnesses and must be able to move a wheelchair into the bus and secure it properly.
• Ability to speak clearly and effectively to students, parents, and District employees.
• Ability to manage groups of children.
• Sufficient rudimentary knowledge of bus mechanical operations to describe problems to a mechanic.
• Knowledge of local streets and address system.

The employee frequently is required to walk; use hands and fingers; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to sit; climb or balance; and bend, stoop, kneel, or crouch. The employee will be required to move and control an adult-sized wheelchair. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 30 pounds and occasionally team lift and/or move a student with disabilities. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts and extreme heat. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, outside weather conditions and extreme cold; toxic or caustic chemicals; risk of electrical shock and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
