General Maintenance Technician

Position Summary

The General Maintenance Technician performs a wide variety of maintenance and grounds duties to support the operation, safety, and appearance of Altar Valley School District facilities. This position assists the Maintenance Department in maintaining district buildings, grounds, equipment, and systems to ensure a safe and productive learning environment for students and staff.

The General Maintenance Technician works collaboratively with district staff and administrators and may assist in supervising summer maintenance/grounds personnel and other temporary employees as assigned.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Follow verbal and written instructions accurately.
  • Perform routine and minor repairs to district buildings, facilities, and equipment.
  • Work cooperatively and collaboratively with maintenance staff and other district departments.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe maintenance shop and work areas.
  • Inspect, maintain, and care for maintenance equipment, tools, and vehicles.
  • Operate  equipment, including forklift, sweepers, mowers, and similar equipment.
  • Safely operate power tools, hand tools, and grounds maintenance equipment.
  • Pick up and deliver equipment, parts, materials, and supplies as needed.
  • Perform routine grounds maintenance.
  • Maintain the district tool inventory, ensuring accurate accountability for tools, equipment, and supplies checked in and out by district personnel.
  • Attend required training sessions, workshops, and professional development opportunities.
  • Assist with warranty repairs and coordination for new buildings, equipment, and building systems.
  • Inspect, monitor, and perform routine maintenance on fire suppression systems.
  • Follow all applicable OSHA regulations and district safety procedures.
  • Diagnose and repair irrigation systems as needed.
  • Respond to district maintenance needs on an on-call basis when required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Possess or be able to obtain an Arizona Fingerprint Clearance Card (IVP).
  • Minimum of two (2) years of maintenance experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to respond to district needs on an on-call basis.
  • Reliable cell phone available for emergency contact.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain professional conduct and appearance while working with students, staff, and the public.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while exercising sound judgment.
  • Valid Arizona driver's license and an acceptable driving record.

  • Ability to solve problems and make sound decisions in a fast-paced environment.

Physical Demands

  • Stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, climb, and perform physical labor for extended periods.
  • Frequently lift, carry, push, and pull materials and equipment.
  • Occasionally lift and move objects weighing more than 50 pounds.
  • Work from ladders, scaffolds, and elevated surfaces when necessary.
  • Operate power equipment in environments with moderate to high noise levels.
  • Work outdoors in varying weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, wind, and rain.
  • Drive district vehicles between district sites.
  • May be exposed to hazardous equipment, chemicals, electrical systems, and other potentially dangerous working conditions while following appropriate safety procedures.

Work Environment

The essential functions of this position require:

  • Frequent lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling.
  • Frequent climbing and balancing.
  • Frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling.
  • Frequent use of fine motor skills and hand dexterity.

Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in a variety of weather conditions.
