Job Description:
SUMMARY: Manages daily school health office operations and services to support student health and wellness, promoting a positive educational environment
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
· Performs routine first aid procedures; assists in screening ill or injured students.
· Upon evaluation, refers seriously ill or injured students to the emergency medical system (911).
· Serves as a liaison between children, staff, school nurse, parents, and community and external health and social agencies.
· Maintains student health records. Ensures health histories are recorded. May maintain diabetic student’s records and conduct diabetic sugar tests and maintains food allergy information for teachers and cafeteria staff as needed.
· Screens hearing and vision of students and posts results to health records.
· Gathers immunization history from parents, physicians and health care facilities and records on health record. Interprets immunization records. Inputs immunization data into records system.
· Maintains a daily log of all students that have been tended to, recording the reason for the visit and actions taken; inputs data into computer.
· Arranges for and assists nurse with special health programs such as: lice screening, fluoride administrations and immunization clinics.
· Reports communicable diseases to appropriate health agency for further instruction.
· Assists in medications distribution and monitoring of diabetic diet as needed.
· Schedules appointments, collects permission slips and fee payments for various available services.
· Presents and provides health related programs and services to various staff.
· Assists with clerical duties such as answering phones, mail duties, etc.
· Maintains health office supplies and orders supplies when needed.
· Uses first aide procedures to triage student illnesses.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
· Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
· Knowledge of all basic first aid methods, including CPR, AED and training methods.
· Awareness of the universal precautions for handling body fluids and blood borne pathogens.
· Must demonstrate proficiency with thermometer and sphygmomanometer.
· Knowledge of substance abuse detection methods.
· Knowledge of child protective services and reporting.
· Ability to handle illness and injury to others in a professional manner, and refer to the registered nurse as necessary for further evaluation.
· Knowledge of medical abbreviations.
· Ability to apply common sense understanding to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of situations.
· Ability to work cooperatively and courteously with staff, students, parents and community members.
· Perform all duties in accordance with Federal and State laws, district procedures and Board policies.
QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS:
Education & Experience:
· High School Diploma or equivalent
· 1 year previous experience working with children
· Current CPR/AED/First Aid Certification
· Previous clerical or medical experience preferred
· Any equivalent combination of training, education and experience that meets minimum requirements
