JOB TYPE: Full-time, Salaried, in-person 

SALARY - $60,000-70,000

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Phoenix Modern is seeking a compassionate, proactive, and learner-centered School Counselor to support the social-emotional wellness, behavioral growth, and safety of our K–8 learning community. This position is funded through a School Safety Grant and is focused on strengthening preventative mental health supports, crisis response systems, restorative practices, family partnerships, and campus-wide wellness initiatives.

The School Counselor will work collaboratively with guides, leadership, families, and community agencies to ensure every learner feels safe, seen, supported, and empowered to grow. The ideal candidate believes deeply in relationship-based education and is passionate about creating inclusive environments rooted in love, joy, growth, and wonder.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

  1. Learner Support & Counseling

  • Provide short-term individual and small group counseling services focused on emotional regulation, social skills, conflict resolution, anxiety, grief, self-esteem, and resilience.

  • Support learners experiencing behavioral, emotional, attendance, or mental health challenges.

  • Conduct risk assessments and participate in crisis response and safety planning when needed.

  • Collaborate with families to connect learners with outside counseling and community mental health resources.

  • Maintain confidential learner records and documentation in accordance with ethical and legal guidelines.

  1. School Safety & Wellness

  • Help implement school-wide safety, wellness, and prevention initiatives funded through the School Safety Grant.

  • Participate in the development and monitoring of crisis response, threat assessment, and behavioral intervention systems.

  • Provide de-escalation and restorative support during learner conflicts and emotional crises.

  • Assist with creating calm-down spaces, sensory supports, and wellness resources across campus.

  • Promote a positive school culture centered on belonging, emotional safety, and healthy relationships.

  1. Collaboration & Consultation

  • Partner with guides and leadership to support learner behavior plans and classroom strategies.

  • Participate in MTSS, 504, Exceptional Learner Services, attendance, and family support meetings.

  • Provide consultation and coaching to staff on trauma-informed practices, social-emotional learning, and behavior support strategies.

  • Collaborate with community organizations and service providers to expand learner and family support.

  1. Family Engagement

  • Build trusting relationships with families through consistent communication and partnership.

  • Facilitate parent workshops, family resources, and wellness education opportunities.

  • Support families in navigating social-emotional, behavioral, and community resource needs.

  1. Program Development

  • Help develop and implement a comprehensive counseling and prevention program aligned with the school’s mission.

  • Collect data related to learner wellness, attendance, behavior, and intervention effectiveness.

  • Support grant reporting requirements and documentation connected to safety and wellness initiatives.

Our instructional approach at Phoenix Modern provides learners with significant opportunities to play an active role in their own learning and shape the community. On a typical day, learners engage in self-paced core skill development using a variety of tools and resources, participate in guided discussions, and immerse themselves in multi-week projects and workshops. Our mixed-age elementary and middle school studios are prepared for 20-25 learners, representing 2 grade levels in each studio.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master Degree

  • Arizona Guidance Counselor Certificate

  • Knowledge of special education laws, procedures, practices, materials, equipment, and compliance standards required to provide appropriate learning experiences for special education students

  • Ability to commute to Phoenix, AZ 85012 

  • Experience in consultation/collaboration with regular classroom teachers; ability to coordinate activities with related and specialist staff

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with peers, parents and the community; excellent human relations skills; skill in both oral and written communication; ability to work in multicultural environment with diverse population of students, staff, and parents

  • Obtain and maintain current First Aid, and CPR certification

  • Ability to assess needs, develop and implement IEP goals, and evaluate outcomes in specialty
