Job Description:

POSITION JOB TITLE:     Teaching – Special Education, Self-Contained

POSITION SUPERVISOR:  Principal

GENERAL STATEMENT OF POSITION'S PURPOSE:  To provide instruction for at-home or exceptional students through individualized focus on learning skills.

QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION AND CERTIFICATION:

  • Bachelor's Degree or Higher
  • Special Education/Severe Profound

EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience with students with disabilities
  • Experience with students who might be prone to seizures
  • Ability to communicate and work well with staff and students.

DEMONSTRATES KNOWLEDGE/PROFICIENCY OF EQUIPMENT, TOOLS, MATERIALS AND SKILLS:

  • Demonstrated proficiency in handling blood borne pathogens
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with medical equipment/procedures, such as Foley catheter

PRINCIPAL DUTIES:

  • Prepare instructional materials
  • Prepare a physical environment
  • Complete student records/attendance requirements/special reports
  • Escort students to library, office, and cafeteria
  • Assist students with physical limitations to bathroom
  • Deal with and handles seizures, other behavioral problems
  • Deal with diaper changing
  • Works with many pieces of equipment; such as lifts, speech devices & other assistive technology devices.
  • Complete TCIS Training
  • Able to demonstrate positive, consistent and clear communication with staff and students
  • Knowledge of differentiated sensory needs/sensory diets
  • Knowledge in least to most prompting
  • Able to demonstrate positive behavioral supports
  • Knowledge in de-escalation and restraint training
  • Knowledge in ABA Practices and total communication
  • Able to differentiate instruction
  • Demonstrates knowledge of AT and AT Devices
  • Able to supervise and oversee Paraprofessionals
  • Able to promote dignity and provide instruction consistent with chronological age as well as ability level
  • Collaborates with related service providers
  • Knowledge in assisting with functional life skills and vocational training.
  • Write IEP's
  • Communicate with parents
  • All other related tasks as assigned

PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS:

LEVEL OF ACCOUNTABILITY AND AUTHORITY

  • Perform as directed; responsible for Paraprofessional Supervision.

INTERACTION WITH OTHERS:

  • Interacts primarily with staff, students, parents and related service providers.

TIME MANAGEMENT:

  • Extensive planning and scheduling for students and para-professionals.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Daily exposure to hazardous materials such as blood borne pathogens and body fluids

  • The work environment is that of a self-contained classroom. This classroom can be quiet one minute then noisy the next. Students and staff are frequently out in the community as well. Most of the student have multiple disabilities. Students might have seizures, and someone who may not be continent. Some students may have behaviors that are self-injurious in nature or injurious to others. It is a very difficult environment.
