Position Title: American Sign Language (ASL) Teacher

Core Function:

The American Sign Language Teacher is responsible for developing, implementing, and assessing a comprehensive curriculum for teaching American Sign Language and Deaf Culture to students. This role involves creating an engaging and communicative learning environment that fosters proficiency in ASL and promotes an understanding of the rich linguistic and social nuances of the Deaf community. The teacher plays a critical role in equipping students with essential language skills, cultural competency, and communicative confidence.

Key Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Curriculum Development and Instruction:

    • Design, prepare, and deliver high-quality, communicative-based ASL lessons that adhere to state and national foreign language standards.

    • Develop curriculum materials, lesson plans, and teaching strategies that cater to diverse learning styles and proficiency levels (e.g., ASL I, II, III, etc.).

    • Utilize a variety of instructional techniques, including visual aids, technology, interactive activities, and immersion practices, to maximize student engagement and comprehension.

    • Maintain an environment where ASL is the primary language of instruction during class time to foster immersion.

  • Assessment and Evaluation:

    • Create, administer, and grade various formal and informal assessments, including receptive and expressive signing performance tasks, quizzes, and projects.

    • Regularly monitor and evaluate student progress, providing timely and constructive feedback to students and parents/guardians.

    • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of student attendance, grades, and progress in accordance with school policy.

  • Cultural Competency and Advocacy:

    • Integrate the history, literature, values, and social aspects of Deaf Culture into the curriculum.

    • Serve as a resource and advocate for Deaf awareness, promoting respect and understanding of the Deaf community among the broader school population.

    • Organize and supervise extracurricular activities related to ASL and Deaf Culture, such as ASL clubs or community events.

  • Collaboration and Professionalism:

    • Collaborate effectively with colleagues, administrators, and parents to support the holistic development of students.

    • Participate in departmental, school-wide, and district-wide meetings, in-service training sessions, and professional development opportunities to stay current with best practices in ASL instruction and foreign language education.

    • Manage classroom resources effectively and maintain a safe, orderly, and productive learning environment.

Qualifications (Desired):

  • A Bachelor’s degree (masters desired) in Language Education, ASL, Deaf Studies, or a related field.

  • Fluency in American Sign Language (documented by an appropriate certification, such as a state teaching license with an ASL endorsement, or comparable ASL proficiency assessment).

  • Prior successful experience teaching ASL at the middle school or high school level is highly desirable but not required.

  • Knowledge of current pedagogical methods for foreign language acquisition, specifically focused on visual-gestural languages.

  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.

  • Ability to connect positively with students and motivate them to achieve proficiency.
