TEACHER ASL       

Location:  Phoenix Campus 

Employee Status: Permanent                     

Hours Per Week:  40

Work Calendar:  10-Month 

Pay Rate:  $42,545-$105,701/yr

CLASSIFICATION SPECIFICATION:

Overview: A  Teacher / ASL Specialist is a deaf educator fluent in ASL who teaches core subjects and supports ASL communication.   
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Provide quality instruction to students
  • Prepare daily lesson plans
  • Evaluate students' skills to determine the best learning
  • Write and implement Individual Education Plans (IEP)
  • All other duties as assigned

  KNOWLEDGE OF:

  • Arizona Academic Standards
  • Current educational and diagnostic practices as they apply to educating sensory impaired students
  • Lesson plan and Individual Education Plan development
  • Student evaluation practices
  • Policies, procedures, and programs of the immediate work unit
  • Principles and practices of administration and management
  • Agency or program rules, regulations, and operating procedures

SKILLED IN:

  • Advanced SLPI score 
  • Behavior management
  • Planning and organization
  • Program development
  • Student evaluation

  Ability to:

  • Communicate effectively with students, staff, and the public
  • Instruct students to retain information
  • Complete student evaluation
  • Develop lesson plans
  • Work cooperatively in teams

     LICENSING/CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • College/University Degree in Education with coursework specific to sensory impairments
  • Must be able to pass FBI and State background checks.
  • Bachelor’s degree (Master’s preferred) in DHH, BVI, early childhood, and/or multiple disabilities.
  • Certified/certifiable by the AZ Department of Education in hearing-impaired or visually impaired. 
  • Applicants without a certificate in hearing or vision impairment, but with a degree/certification in mild/moderate disabilities, moderate/severe disabilities, or early childhood special education, may be considered if willing to seek endorsement in hearing or vision impairment.
