CLASSIFICATION: CLASSIFIED  

JOB TITLE: LIVESTOCK AND STABLE TECHNICIAN 

SUPERVISOR: SITE SUPERVISOR 

CALENDAR: 12 MONTH CALENDAR  

SALARY: GRADE 112 

 

Job Goal 

 

Support High-School Agriculture FFA students through collaborative supervision and instructional guidance. The successful candidate will work closely with school staff to ensure students receive hands-on experience in the proper care of animals, safe and effective use of agricultural and farming equipment, and related learning activities. This role involves actively supervising students as they perform livestock husbandry tasks such as feeding, handling, grooming, stabling, and preparing animals for shows, ensuring all activities are conducted safely and in accordance with YQCA animal care standards. The candidate will also be responsible for maintaining agriculture facilities, ensuring compliance with animal health regulations and safety protocols for stables and arenas. Additionally, the role may include organizing and leading livestock demonstrations to reinforce student learning and engagement. 

 

 

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • High School Diploma or equivalent 

  • Working knowledge of livestock husbandry and agricultural practices 

  • Ability to pass a driving record background screening 

  • 3 years' experience in a farm or veterinary setting is preferred but not required  

  • Basic arithmetic skills to calculate weights, volumes, and portions 

  • Possess, or possess the ability to obtain, a valid IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card 

  • Ability to work a varying schedule, including weekends and some holidays 

 

Core Job Functions: 

  • Works collaboratively with agriculture (CTE and FFA) program administrators and teachers to directly supervise and assist students in the program. 

  • Supervise and assist students and staff with the calm handling, care, and feeding of livestock used in agricultural education and FFA activities in a high school setting. 

  • Supervise and assist students with tasks involving the cleaning of animal stables, pens, cages, arenas, and exercise areas. 

  • Supervise and assist students with removing soiled straw and bedding materials and loading, separating, and replenishing materials. 

  • Perform minor repairs to livestock and farming equipment such as fencing and gates, locks, irrigation, and other physical structures. Promptly report any farm or livestock equipment that has sustained significant damage and requires major repairs. 

  • Works collaboratively with agriculture (CTE and FFA) program administrators and teachers for developing safety procedures and setting student work schedules that support instruction, animal care, and events and efficient stable operations. 

  • Supervises and assists students in the proper care of animals and guides them on proper use of equipment and materials. May set up animal husbandry demonstrations to support Agriculture program student learning objectives. 

  • Ensures compliance with safety and access requirements. 

  • Documents and maintains files of farm stable operations. Inventories and stores equipment, materials, and supplies for easy access. 

  • Observes animals, recognizes and reports changes in behavior, breathing, eating, lethargy, and other conditions. May assist staff as needed in safe medication administration practices. 

  • May participate in functional meetings and convey outcomes and instructions to others.  

  • Performs other duties as assigned that support the overall objective of the position.

Physical Requirements 

Incumbent must be able to function effectively indoors and outdoors in a farm and field environment engaged in work of an active nature. Requires sufficient ambulatory ability to stand for extended periods of time, lift and move medium-to-heavy weight materials up to 50 pounds, and move large and small animals to and among pens and fields. Requires sufficient arm, hand, finger strength and dexterity to rope and safely move animals in order to avoid injury to self and students. Requires normal hearing and speaking skills to communicate with staff and students in one-on-one and small group settings. Requires visual acuity to observe moving objects, read printed materials, instructions, and labels, and to observe students performing assignments.
