TITLE: Safety and Preparedness Director

CONTRACT TERMS:  12 Months

SALARY CLASSIFICATION:  Administrator (Exempt)

GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES: The School Safety Director is responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing safety and security policies and procedures within the school district. This role ensures a safe and secure learning environment for students, staff, and visitors while collaborating with local law enforcement, emergency response agencies, and tribal, state, and county jurisdictions. The director will focus on integrating technology into safety protocols and training staff and students in active shooter response strategies.

PRINCIPLE DUTIES:

·       Create and maintain comprehensive safety plans, protocols, and emergency response procedures tailored to the specific needs of the school district.

·       Implement and oversee the use of technology solutions (e.g., surveillance systems, communication tools, fire alarms) that enhance school safety and security.

·       Oversee and supervise regular safety drills and training sessions for staff, students, and emergency personnel to ensure preparedness for various emergency situations.

·       Lead the response to safety incidents, including coordinating with emergency services and managing communication with parents and the media.

·       Conduct regular safety audits and assessments of school facilities to identify potential hazards and recommend mitigation strategies.

·       Work closely with local law enforcement, fire departments, and tribal, state, and county agencies to enhance community safety initiatives and ensure effective communication during emergencies.

·       Lead the response to safety incidents, including coordinating with emergency services and managing communication with parents and the media.

·       Promote a culture of safety through educational programs for students and staff, fostering awareness of safety practices and emergency procedures.

·       Maintain accurate records of safety incidents and violations, conducting investigations as necessary and reporting findings to appropriate authorities.

·       Serve as a safety consultant for school administrators, providing guidance on safety-related issues and compliance with state and federal regulations.

·       Engage with parents, community members, and stakeholders to promote safety initiatives and gather feedback on safety concerns.

  • Manages and supervises all employees in responsibility areas, including the recruitment, selection, training, professional development and evaluation of staff; makes recommendations regarding goals, provides constructive feedback and takes corrective action if necessary.
  • Continues to acquire professional knowledge and learn of current developments related to the position by attending seminars, workshops or professional meetings, or by conducting research
  • Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Superintendent.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:

 

·       Knowledge of best practices in finance, accounting budget development and bookkeeping principles.

·       Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide, and perform complex arithmetic operations.

·       Ability to understand, apply and use personal computers, copier and fax machines, and software applications (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

·       Ability to analyze situations to define and draw conclusions.

·       Ability to develop and implement projects.

·       Ability to communicate effectively with students, staff, and emergency services, including clear verbal communication during stressful situations.

·       Ability to work collaboratively with diverse groups.

·       Ability to think critically and make quick decisions in high-pressure situations.

·       Ability to organize multiple tasks and conflicting time constraints.

·       Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to leadership, performance and professional growth.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

ACCEPTABLE EDUCATION, TRAINING & EXPERIENCE:

·       Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, education, emergency management, or a related field preferred; equivalent experience in law enforcement or military service may be considered in lieu of a degree; or any combination thereof.

·       Valid IVP Level One Fingerprint Clearance Card

·       Previous experience in school safety, emergency management, or law enforcement.

·       Strong knowledge of safety regulations, emergency response procedures, and crisis management, with specific training in technology safety and active shooter protocols.

·       Familiarity with tribal, state, and county jurisdictional processes and regulations.

·       Certification in school safety or emergency management (e.g., CPR/First Aid, CPI, FEMA, ASIS) is a plus.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

·       When working in standard office environments (standing, stooping, bending, sitting, etc…)

·       Ability to walk, stand, and move throughout the school campus and facilities for extended periods.

·       Capacity to respond quickly to emergencies and stressful situations, which may involve running or moving rapidly

·       Ability to handle the physical demands of the job, including potential long hours during events or emergencies.

·       Ability to think quickly and remain calm under pressure, which can impact physical responses in emergencies

PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS:

TIME MANAGEMENT: Must be able to adapt in emergency situations in addition to planning cyclically three month, six months, and up to one year in advance.

STRESS MANAGEMENT: High levels of stress with many time deadlines and possible emergency situations.

PUBLIC CONTACT: High levels of contact with law enforcement, fire departments, tribal, state, and county agencies.  Additional interaction may include but not limited to: students, district employees, and general public.  

RESPONSIBILITY: Responsible for an integral department within the school district

EVALUATION PROCEDURES: In accordance with provisions specified in governing board policy

SUPERVISION RECEIEVED: Superintendent

SUPERVISION GIVEN: District and Site safety personnel

$5,000.00 - recruitment/retention stipend.
